Volunteer Opportunities
There is Something for Everyone

There are many opportunities to volunteer in the congregation, such as: teaching/facilitating education programs, serving refreshments, providing refreshments, welcoming members, serving on a team or committee, making the soup for movie night, becoming a Service leader. Just join with us and we will help you find your way to engage and serve.

Community and Volunteer Opportunities

There are many opportunities offered at Umpqua Unitarian Universalist Congregation that help us deepen our truest selves, connect authentically with others and engage with needs beyond our own. Whether it be attending a Sunday Service or a special event, being a part of an affinity group or a social justice effort, or making soup, every role is valued and important, no matter how big or small. Connections are encouraged and welcomed in this vibrant community. Whether you’re searching for meaning, mending a broken heart, or simply needing some friends who share your values, Unitarian Universalism is here for you: connecting, caring, healing.

Committees and Groups

In addition to the Board of Directors, a number of volunteers serve the congregation on committees, task forces, and in countless other ways.

Adult Enrichment Opportunities (AEO)

Brings people together for spiritual awakening and faith development, religious growth, and related learning that has relevance in our lives. The program includes opportunities to deepen understanding of our Faith, engagement with ethical and moral questions, and spiritual experiences which inspire, transform, and sustain. We look to be introduced to new ideas and experiences.

These objectives are explored through 18 to 22 weeks of Wednesday gatherings throughout the Winter. Experiences take the form of individual workshops, series of related topics, films, book discussions, and Special Events.

Art Committee

UUUC is dedicated to providing and sharing top quality media that amplifies the message of Unitarian Universalism. “Hanging from our walls are many things that brings us together; art that inspires us to open our hearts, hands, and minds and forget our differences for a moment and remember we are one people”. ~Rev. Dr. Forrest Church. The Art Committee welcomes art from the Congregation and those beyond our walls who provide work consistent with our Principles.

Care and Concerns Committee

Care and Concerns offers to help Members and Friends handle challenges in their lives. For midlife and aging members and all others, this committee watches for ways to be of assistance. Cards are sent for special events and illness; hospital and home visits are made when needed; activity assistance is provided to help someone stay at home; when needed help with moving and closing a household has happened; and we often work with family members to help them make needed decisions. When called for we will ask appropriate authorities for a social work assessment or a welfare safety check. And we assist as desired with Celebrations of Life.

Endowment Committee

UUUC has a separate endowment fund to assure the long-range financial future of the congregation; to help manage financial emergencies; and to fund capital needs and special projects that support the vision and mission of the Congregation. The endowment committee serves as the caretakers of this fund. Money is seen as most meaningful when we move from a mindset of needing it to pay the bills to an understanding about the importance of money to fulfill the ministry of the congregation.

Our blueprint for successful fundraising is to move beyond the myth of scarcity to the reality of a need for savings to enable us to grow and flourish.

Facilities and Ground Management

This committee provides oversight and ongoing maintenance for the use of the church building and property including maintaining and preserving the church building and grounds in order to ensure that they are safe, functional, inviting and support and enhance the congregation’s various functions, services, and activities. This includes housekeeping and light maintenance activities and managing both volunteers and contractors for the ongoing maintenance of and repairs to the building and grounds.

Facilities Managed by Office Administrator

The Office Administrator manages facility use policies, procedures, forms, and rental rate agreements. Responsibilities also include oversight of the facility use calendar, including both regularly scheduled and special events usage, ongoing matters related to current and future facility rental agreements, and communication with external entities concerning facility use, including interested community groups.

Faith Based Liaison Committee

Faith Based Liaison (Committee) person represents the Congregation and interacts with other Churches in the Roseburg area. Our Liaison represents UUUC on the Blue Zones Faith Based Committee and the merging with the Blue Zones (BZ) Engagement Committee. In 2020 our Congregation was designated the 1st Church in the Greater Douglas County Area to join with and gain Blue Zones recognition as a Congregation involved in healthy BZ activities (walking, purpose workshops, healthy eating, etc.). UUUC has also met with the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon group.

The Finance Committee monitors the churches financial health monthly, or as needed, and provides feedback to the Board of Directors. The functions of this committee include soliciting budgetary requests for the next fiscal year from standing committees and staff, integrating budgetary requests and expected revenues into an operating budget, developing a Congregation budget for approval by the congregation, and presenting the final budget to the congregation for approval at the Annual Congregational Business Meeting.

Membership Committee

The objectives of this committee include engaging in activities that assure continual growth of the congregation and encourage the active participation of members of the congregation. Committee members welcome visitors and encourage their return, provide fellowship opportunities through conversation and introduction to other congregants, and encourage new people and members to attend affinity discussion groups. This committee is the welcoming face of UUUC that makes our presence known in the community. The committee provides a route to membership through activities, education and the induction ceremony. Additional responsibility includes conducting “Pledge Sundays” appeal and follow-up to secure all pledges and while evaluating pledge commitments to notify the Board of changes in the operating budget and program budgets, as necessary.

Nominating Committee

This committee is responsible for the development of leaders at all levels within the congregation as well as for selecting and presenting candidates to the Congregation for election to the Board of Directors.

Social Justice Committee

Unitarian Universalist are called by our faith to respond actively and publicly to the injustice and suffering in our community and the larger world. Through direct service, advocacy and witness, and education, UUUC’s Social Justice and Inclusion Committee provides engaging opportunities for members and friends to gain greater understanding of injustice in its many forms, to take action that leads to systemic change, and to be of service toward a more caring, just, and peaceful world. The S J Committee researches facts and perspectives relevant to issues and advises the Congregation of local actions on issues of interest for participation.

Special Events Committee

The purpose of the Special Events Committee has been to provide diverse social, cultural, and often fundraising events for the Congregation. Events have included: Speakers, Poetry and Literary readings, Concerts, Workshops on Climate Change, Racism, and other significant topics, Wine Tastings and Auctions.

Sunday Service and Music Committee

The mission of the UUUC Sunday Services and Music Committee is to plan and provide consistent, weekly spiritual experience of the highest quality for our Congregants. Our Sunday morning Worship inspires growth in body, mind, heart and spirit. Services focus on spiritual life, personal growth, our life in community and living our faith in the world. We draw from many sources for inspiration including readings, music, and sermons. We encourage weekly congregational engagement in the service/talk through a congregational feedback segment in the service. This committee strives for growth of membership through meeting the spiritual needs in our community. We further pledge to work toward the growth of a Beloved Community of Support.

Worship associates and guest speakers join our ministers in leading worship, embodying a diversity of voice and person that echoes our compassion for diversity of many kinds.

From Video We are Unitarian Universalists Unitarian Universalism reconnects, bringing people together with meaning and inspiration. Stories and Photos

Stories and Photos We help change lives for the better. Stories from our members and friends speak to the acceptance, transformation, and happiness you can find at UUUC.

Each of us at UUUC has a different story to tell about how we found a spiritual home here. A few of us are life-long UUs but most are not, having come from a variety of other religious backgrounds or from no particular place of faith. Whatever our journey, sharing the stories of the paths we took helps connect us to each other and to the shared journey we are now making.
